At TD Securities, we are committed to creating positive changes, championing an inclusive workplace and amplifying the voices of the next generation of TD talent. In celebration of Asian Heritage Month and American Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we spoke with Rutvik Patel, Director, TD Securities Strategy, as he shares his experiences and a message for those inside and outside the Asian community.
What does Asian Heritage Month mean to you personally?
Asian Heritage Month is a reminder for me to pause, reflect and recognize the resilience and contributions of Asian communities and to share that pride with others.
Can you share a memory or experience that shaped your connection to your Asian heritage?
One of the most meaningful experiences that deepened my connection to my Asian heritage was my wedding. We incorporated so many beautiful and meaningful traditions — from the vibrant outfits and detailed rituals to the music and ceremonies. It was powerful to see how these traditions have been passed down through generations and shape our family values.
Are there particular traditions, foods or practices that make you feel especially connected to your heritage?
For sure - food is a huge one! Sharing dishes like tandoori chicken, biryani and sweets like laddoos always make me feel connected to my culture. These experiences carry the flavors and emotions of my heritage.
How do you celebrate or observe Asian Heritage Month?
I try to engage in conversations that highlight Asian voices and stories and I also make an effort to learn more about the broader Asian diaspora beyond my own heritage.
What aspects of your culture are you most proud of?
I'm most proud of our resilience and adaptability while still holding onto our roots. I also deeply admire our strong sense of community, the value placed on family and respect and the rich traditions in art, music and spirituality.
Do you feel your heritage is well-represented in your local community or in mainstream culture?
I’m happy to see more Asian voices in media, business and leadership, but there are still a lot of stereotypes and not enough representation of how diverse Asian cultures really are. There’s more work to be done to show all the different voices and stories.
Have you seen a shift in how Asian cultures are perceived or portrayed in recent years?
Yes, there’s been a positive shift toward more authentic and nuanced portrayals, especially in media and entertainment.
What challenges do you think the Asian community still faces?
We still face issues like stereotyping and being overlooked in conversations about diversity.
How can others—both inside and outside the Asian community—honor and support Asian heritage meaningfully?
Listen to our stories, learn about the meaning behind our traditions and make space for real conversations. Be curious, not just during Asian Heritage Month, but year-round!
What message would you share with younger generations of Asian descent during this month?
Embrace your identity fully and proudly. Your heritage is a source of strength and beauty. Know that your voice matters and never feel you have to minimize who you are to fit in. You carry generations of resilience and brilliance with you.
